Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma, ca. mid 20th century CE. An unusual, large, dynamic wooden carving, depicting a seated musician perched atop a carved pillow; this is suspended on an integrated spiral-shaped leg above a circular base. The musician plays castanets, and looks upward at the viewer with inlaid stone eyes. Aside from eyes, the entire figure is painted a rich, earthy red, and hundreds of tiny glass fragments attached as ornament give it a glittering, lively appearance. Size: 26.25" H (66.7 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Boston, Massachusetts, USA collection, in storage since 1992

  • Condition: Base has a crack in it. Otherwise in nice condition. The finial on the figure's cap is a separate piece, but it is firmly inserted into the head and does not move. Small losses on surface, especially to the fingers and to the glass. Overall in nice condition with fine preservation of detail.
