Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) people, ca. 1950s CE. A hand-carved yellow cedar totem pole, featuring an orca (killer whale) and a raven. The carving highlights the rich color of the wood, with black, red, forest green, and pale, sky blue pigment on the faces of the animals, especially around the eyes. This totem stands atop a flat, square platform with an owl-like face on one side. The lower back of the pole is deeply inscribed with a large "K-." Totem poles are visual statements of the identity of their creators; the figures depicted on them represent beings who the ancestors encountered in the mythical past and who became symbols of their families. Size: 6.4" L x 6.5" W x 19.3" H (16.3 cm x 16.5 cm x 49 cm)
