Native American/First Nations, Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, Canada, Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl/Kwagiulth) people, ca. mid 20th century CE, made by Sampson Robertson (b. 1946, Kingcome Inlet, British Columbia, Canada). A handsome cedar box made from several pieces of wood held together by wood joints. A wide base and separate lid that mirrors the form of the base complete the object. Painted in bright colors on the face is an image of a bear, an important figure for the Kwakwaka'wakw people. Sampson Robertson began to carve as a teenager, learning from his father. Today, he lives in Vancouver. Size: 11.25" L x 11" W x 10.25" H (28.6 cm x 27.9 cm x 26 cm)
