Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) people, ca. 1972 CE, signed on the back by Tsungani (active mid 20th century to present). A hand-carved dark cedar mask, made by Tsungani (Fearon Smith Jr.), the younger brother of Chief Lelooska and chief of the Wiummasgum clan. The mask represents a shaman-like human figure with a stylized zoomorphic face on the forehead. Beautiful blue, red, and black pigment decorate the face, while the natural beauty of the rich cedar comes through. Brown, real hair hangs down from the back of the mask in several clumps, giving the mask a lifelike touch. Size: 7.8" W x 8.4" H (19.8 cm x 21.3 cm); 10.8" H (27.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Tsungani is the younger brother of Don Lelooska. In 1996, after his brother's death, Tsungani assumed the leadership role of the family and was given Don's title of Chief. Today, Tsungani is the head storyteller and a mask carver for the Lelooska Cultural Center and Lelooska Foundation.
