Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, British Columbia, Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka'wakw), ca. late 20th to 21st century CE. Signed "Patty Fawn" on verso. A wonderful marine ivory pendant expertly carved in the form of a stylized fish, perhaps a salmon, and adorned by inlaid nacre shell. Ovoid in shape, the aquatic animal presents with the relief image of a bird on its body and a petite pectoral fin held close to its chest. His tail fin bends forward and is drilled laterally to form the suspension loop. Strung on a strand of animal hide to be wearable. Size (pendant): 4.1" L x 1.6" W (10.4 cm x 4.1 cm); (strand): 14.6" L (37.1 cm)

Native artist Patty Fawn and her daughter, Nakweesee (which means Stars) are known for their carvings of animals of the Northwest. Patty Fawn’s family was originally Cherokee from Oklahoma. They moved to the Pacific Northwest where they were adopted by the Kwakwaka'wakw tribe of British Columbia. Patty has stated on multiple occasions that she works in hand-carved bone, deer and elk antler, wood, fossilized walrus ivory from Alaska, and abalone shell. She has exhibited at numerous museums and galleries during her career, including the Chicago Field Museum, Heard Museum, Eiteljorg Museum, Smithsonian National Museum of the Indian ( both NY and Wash, DC ) the Museum of Man, Autry Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Art Museum, the SW Museum of Calif, the Sharlot Hall Museum and many other museums and galleries nation wide.

Please note this piece uses fossilized walrus ivory and cannot be sold to anyone residing in the states of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington. We guarantee the material is from before the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 as the artist has stated that she only works with fossilized walrus ivory on multiple occasions.
