East Asia, Korean Peninsula, ca. mid 20th century CE. A lovely collection of nine vintage kite string spools of varying sizes, including three large ones with hexagonal profiles, three with square profiles, two with linear profiles, and one spool-shaped. Kites are a part of Korean culture that can be traced back to 637 CE; they have been used for both war and fun throughout Korean history, and today there are still several major festivals that feature kite flying. Size of largest (one of the hexagonal ones): 8.25" W x 28.5" H (21 cm x 72.4 cm)

Provenance: estate of William Stockton, Colorado, USA, acquired prior to 1974 while Mr. Stockton was stationed in Okinawa, Japan
