Description:

East Asia, Japan, late Meiji Period, ca. early 20th century CE. A lovely espresso-hued boxwood netsuke, depicting a waterbird, perhaps a crane. Tiny glass beads form eyes, and a dense network of incised lines create the varied patterns of the plumage across the body. Every inch of the bird is detailed, including carved feet drawn up against its body on the underside with two drilled perforations for use between them; a signature is lightly incised in red near the feet on a small mother of pearl disc. Size: 1.8" L (4.6 cm).

Provenance: ex-New Orleans, Louisiana, USA estate collection, purportedly collected prior to 1920
