Description:

East Asia, Japan, late Meiji to Taisho period, ca. 1891 to 1921 CE. A lovely and rare brass vase presenting a cylindrical body that slopes inwards to a gently curved shoulder, corseted neck, and flared rim, all sitting upon a discoid foot. Gorgeous hues of seafoam and russet patina adorn the exterior walls of this elegant vase. The word "NIPPON" has been stamped on the base of the gorgeous vessel, indicating that it was created between 1891 and 1921. In response to the U.S. McKinley Tariff Act, which forbade the import of items that weren’t “plainly marked, stamped, branded, or labeled in legible English words”, Japanese vessels were stamped with the word "Nippon". This practice ended in 1921, however, when the word "Nippon" became considered a Japanese word. Size: 3.375" in diameter x 7" H (8.6 cm x 17.8 cm)
