Description:

Northern Africa, Egypt or Syria, Islamic, ca. 20th century CE. A gorgeous and grand niello vase featuring flowing foliate motifs and linear scrollwork designs both above and below a tall central panel of etched Kufic calligraphy. The inverted piriform steel vessel rests atop a separately attached foot and has a broad shoulder, a narrow neck channel, and a funnel-form neck with a flared rim. The dark, lustrous coloration of the niello results from the mixture of copper, silver, and lead sulphates that form its metallic composition, and this example features inlays of 90% silver. Size: 8" W x 19.9" H (20.3 cm x 50.5 cm); quality of silver: 90%
