Description:

Etidlooie Etidlooie (Inuit - Cape Dorset / Kingnait Settlement, 1911-1981, Disc Number E7-986). Bear and Walrus. Soapstone sculpture with bone tusks, 20th century. Signed "ETIDLOOE" with disc number on base. An enticing soapstone sculpture depicting a polar bear standing in an almost anthropomorphic pose with both front legs raised beside a walrus. The fierce predator gazes down at the walrus, who peers out in the opposite direction; seemingly unaware of the immediate danger above as 2 tusks carved from animal bone protrude downward from his mouth. Inuit soapstone artists frequently portrayed scenes of the wilderness that surrounded them, and this piece is a perfect example of that practice! Size: 3.6" L x 7.2" W x 9.8" H (9.1 cm x 18.3 cm x 24.9 cm)
