Description:

Native American/First Nations, northern Canada, Inuit, probably Sanikiluaq, ca. mid 20th century CE. A delightful deep grey and grey-green argillite carving of a seal, its body elongated as if it is in the act of swimming, streamlined, through an Arctic sea. The front legs, widened into flippers, are carved in relief against the underside of the body, while the tail is folded neatly and swept out behind the animal's long form. The eyes, nostrils, and mouth are incised; the rest of the surface is polished to a matte sheen. Underside has an illegible signature and "1883" incised into it - perhaps a collection number. Size: 7.4" W x 1.05" H (18.8 cm x 2.7 cm)
