Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A beautiful example of a kris (keris), a type of personal ceremonial sword. The hand-carved wooden handle depicts a pair of abstract face maskettes along the interior curve, and a hemispherical brass spacer disc rests in-between the handle and the top of the blade. The forged-iron blade has a gentle serpentine profile, a projecting hand guard, and an upturned Naga serpent head opposite the guard projection. The wooden sheath has a wide guard protector as well as a gilt copper (4% gold) jacket decorated on one side with foliate motifs in repousse. A fabulous example from Indonesia! Size (w/ sheath): 6.6" W x 20.125" H (40.6 cm x 16.8 cm x 51.1 cm); length of blade: 16" L (40.6 cm); quality of gilt: 4%.
