Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A personal ceremonial dagger known as a kris (also keris). The hand-carved wooden handle features a curved profile with intricately incised motifs, and beneath is a brass spacer disc with scalloped upper and lower rims. The forged-steel blade bears a relatively straight profile with sharpened edges, a pointed hand guard, and ribbons of lighter nickel hammered into the surfaces. The wooden sheath has a bulky guard protector with incised decorations beneath the longest flange. Underneath the vertical opening of the nickel silver sheath jacket is a thin veneer of mottled orange and dark brown turtle shell that creates an attractive presentation. Size (w/ sheath): 6.375" W x 19.4" H (16.2 cm x 49.3 cm); (blade): 14.5" L x 3.3" W (36.8 cm x 8.4 cm)
