Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A personal ceremonial sword known as a kris (keris) with nice layers of patina across its surfaces. The hand-carved elephant ivory handle features an effigy of the great demon hero Bhima, and beneath is a brass floral spacer disc. The forged-steel blade exhibits a gentle serpentine profile as well as an incised midrib, a pointed guard, and ribbons of lighter nickel hammered into the surfaces. The wooden sheath has a bulky, sweeping guard protector as well as an interior blade housing that is covered with a brass sheath jacket. A vertical bar of crosshatched motifs is incised on one side of the jacket. Size (w/ sheath): 7.125" W x 18.2" H (18.1 cm x 46.2 cm); (blade): 13.25" L x 3" W (33.7 cm x 7.6 cm)

  • Condition: Interior blade housing not attached to bottom of guard protector. Brass sheath jacket is removable. Minor nicks and oxidation to blade, with stable hairline fissures on handle and guard protector, and old adhesive residue along joint between blade housing and guard protector that is visible only when sheath jacket is removed. Nice patina throughout.
