Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, probably Sumatra, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A lovely example of a personal knife known as a badek (also badik) as well as a 'butterfly' knife due to its relatively slender form. The wooden handle is of a simple design with a protruding ovoid pommel, and a brass spacer cap rests between handle and blade. The hammered-steel blade bears a single-edged design that narrows to a point and has excised grooves along the spine and shoulder. The form-fitting sheath is carved from lustrous, caramel-hued hardwood and exhibits a projecting guard protector, a band of crosshatch patterns across the upper body, and a tapered brass cap. Size (w/ sheath): 2.9" W x 18.875" H (7.4 cm x 47.9 cm); (blade): 11.625" L (29.5 cm)
