Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, Batak people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful bag for carrying betelnuts known as a "sirih" woven from palm fronts and hand beaded with thousands of glass beads threaded into an open-work webbing over a gold foil layer. The three dominant colors on this bag; red, black, and white, are symbolic of the cosmos and family - two important concepts in Batak culture. The cord strap is strung with an assortment of glass, bone, and shell beads. Size: 9" L x 12" W (22.9 cm x 30.5 cm)
