Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali or Java, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask with bulging hemispherical eyes, a broad nose, tall ears adorned with flowers on the tops and lobes, and a gaping mouth filled with a row of teeth and several projecting fangs along the corners. Darkened yellow pigment covers much of the obverse and is complemented with white paint for the eyes and teeth as well as black and red pigment along the brows, mouth, and ears. This mask perhaps represents a "Barong," a lion-like creature that is king of the spirits and leader of the hosts of the good in Balinese mythology. Size: 7.625" W x 7" H (19.4 cm x 17.8 cm); 10.4" H (26.4 cm) on included custom stand.
