Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beautiful kris (also keris) with a wooden handle featuring 8 abstract anthropomorphic maskettes along the interior and exterior curves. Beneath the handle is a gilt copper spacer disc inset with 12 faceted cubic zirconia stones. The forged steel blade exhibits a serpentine profile as well as features of the mythical Garuda including an avian head with a curved beak, a serpent-form midrib, and a flaming tail emanating from the tip. The sheath has a wooden guard protector that rests above a gilt brass sheath jacket that is densely adorned with scrolling foliate motifs. Size (w/ sheath): 6.4" W x 20.4" H (16.3 cm x 51.8 cm); (blade): 14.2" L (36.1 cm)

  • Condition: Wooden blade housing is stuck within sheath jacket and cannot be removed. Sheath jacket and blade housing are removable from bottom of guard protector. Very small chips to guard and tip of blade with light oxidation in scattered areas. Wonderful preservation to finer Garuda details on blade.
