Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A lovely ceremonial sword known as a kris (also keris). The hand-carved wooden handle bears a pair of abstract anthropomorphic maskettes along the interior curve, and the silvered copper spacer disc beneath is inset with several faceted glass cabochons. The dark blade has a gentle serpentine profile with sharpened edges, a shallow midrib, a bifurcated fuller, a protruding hand guard, and a curled tendril on each shoulder. The highly polished wooden sheath exhibits a broad guard protector as well as an open brass sheath jacket with etched leafy motifs. Size (w/ sheath): 7.5" W x 19.8" H (19 cm x 50.3 cm); (blade): 14.75" L x 3.375" W (37.5 cm x 8.6 cm)

  • Condition: Blade housing reattached to bottom of guard protector. Minor abrasions and oxidation to blade, with light encrustations and softening to details on sheath jacket. Sheath jacket is removable from blade housing. Nice patina throughout. Old inventory label on verso of sheath jacket.
