Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful personal dagger known as a kris (also keris) used for ceremonial purposes. The hand-carved wooden handle features a pair of abstract anthropomorphic maskettes along the interior curve. Beneath the handle is a nickel-brass spacer bulb set with dozens of zirconium and glass cabochons as well as a single ruby. The forged-steel blade exhibits a gently oscillating profile as well as intricate gilding accentuating the floral and mythological zoomorphic motifs along the shoulder and projecting hand guard. The wooden sheath features a bulbous guard protector as well as an openwork nickel-brass sheath jacket with neat zoomorphic motifs in front of a crimson-hued felt panel.   • Condition: Sheath jacket is removable from blade housing, and red felt pad is not secured. Minor abrasions to blade and gilding, with loosening to spacer bulb beneath handle. Nice patina to blade and great remains of gilding.
