Description:

Oceania, Indonesia, Sumatra, Batak peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask of a semicircular form with openwork eyes and mouth, a slender nose, and applied tufts of horsehair for the eyebrows and mustache. A pair of drilled holes on the temples enable the mask to be worn, and the entire mask is covered in thick layers of dark-brown pigment. Size: 5.25" W x 8" H (13.3 cm x 20.3 cm); 10.5" H (26.7 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Light abrasions and nicks to obverse, peripheries, and verso, with small portions of horsehair tufts missing, chipping to original pigment, and a few stable fissures, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and traces of original pigment throughout. Old inventory labels on verso.
