Description:

Central Asia, India, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A charming three dimensional marble sculpture of the Hindu Goddess Durga with much of the surface painted in bright colors while also taking advantage of the natural creamy white marble color. Her gilded headdress and the aureole behind her are particularly alluring. Durga, whose power is to preserve the moral order and righteousness in creation, is very popular in the Hindu faith; she is a woman depicted with eight arms and, as here, accompanied by her lion vahana (sacred mount). Size: 4.25" L x 13.2" W x 17.7" H (10.8 cm x 33.5 cm x 45 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, 1980s-2000s
