Description:

Central Asia, India, ca. 20th century CE. A dramatic cast bronze sculpture of the Hindu goddess Durga, seated, with her upper body human and her lower body that of a snake. Atop her head is a headdress with five tall snake heads rising above a jeweled frontispiece. Another snake is draped over her arms. Arms outstretched, she offers a conch shell to the viewer , one of the symbols of the goddess and her consort Shiva. In this unusual portrayal, her face is powerful, with large eyes; she has a sensuous body with jewelry barely covering her naked breasts. Durga, also known as Devi, traditionally holds the weapons of the male Hindu gods in order to give them the energy that she channels to fight evil forces. Size: 3.75" L x 6.2" W x 8.6" H (9.5 cm x 15.7 cm x 21.8 cm)
