Description:

Oceania, Borneo, Kalimantan region, Iban Dayak, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask depicting an expressive visage of slanted ovoid eyes, a broad nose with delineated nostrils, a rectangular mouth filled with three enormous teeth, and a tall forehead which is plateaued on the top. The brown-painted mask is accentuated with streaks of white pigment around the eyes, brows, cheeks, and jawline, and a pair of openwork eye holes are carved on the sides of the nose just to the inside of the eyes. Size: 5.9" W x 10.5" H (15 cm x 26.7 cm).

  • Condition: Small repair beneath right eye, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor chips and abrasions along peripheries, mouth, forehead, and verso, with light encrustations, and fading and darkening to original pigmentation commensurate with age. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Mounted on verso with metal wire for suspension.
