Description:

Donated By: Donick Cary, Emmy-Award winning writer/producer (Letterman /Simpsons / Parks and Recreation /Silicon Valley)

Advertising. Memorabilia. New World, USA, Texas, ca. post-1957 CE. A fun and very rare item! A huge and incredibly entertaining vintage beer sign featuring two playful, yellow-shirted monkeys and a giant beer can on a rotating platform. The name of the beer and logo are printed on clear plastic and rotate around the lower body. The larger monkey hefts the beer can while the smaller perches atop it. Someone has added some vintage cloth white and purple flowers around the base, contributing to its vintage folk art appearance. The monkeys are made of heavy plastic, as is the can, while the lid of the can and the rotating base are made of metal. The design of the Lone Star label provides the date for the piece, as the "Certified Premium Quality" theme was added in 1957. Size: 27" W x 43.5" H (68.6 cm x 110.5 cm)

Lone Star Beer - from Lone Star Brewing Company based out of San Antonio, Texas - produced a number of large, three-dimensional beer signs for advertising purposes. The monkey theme originated in 1939/1940 when the company produced four mechanical monkeys for the New York World Fair held at Flushing Meadows Park. Items like this one were only made for special events like the World's Fair and as a result they are incredibly rare. This is a really fun find for Texans, beer lovers, and anyone who likes vintage twentieth century material culture!

Provenance: private D. C. collection, California, USA; D. C. is an Emmy Award winning Hollywood writer and Executive Producer, collected before 2000

  • Condition: Expected wear from age and handling. Light wear to paint, and tiny losses to the fingers of the larger monkey. Flowers are a more recent addition. The plastic sleeve around the base has been reattached with velcro added at its corners to keep it in place. Motor is functional but piece does not currently rotate - it may need a new belt.Old losses to flat terminus. Minor surface scratches. Flute works beautifully.

    Making music happen since 2009…

Today, Musack's mission is to give kids and teens a voice through music by providing guitars, drums, and support for music teachers - wherever the need arises.

But back in 2009, Emmy-Award winning writer/producer Donick Cary (Letterman /Simpsons / Parks and Recreation /Silicon Valley) began Musack with a simple vision - raise money to fund musical programs for his hometown high school on Nantucket Island. After a rash of teen suicides on the island, Donick thought about how he and his friends got through their teen years. Music.

Musack continues to make music happen around the world with support from people like you. All lots offered for sale in today’s fundraising auction have been donated by celebrities, non-celebrities, and local businesses. Help us help our kids - bid high, bid often!
