Native American, Southwestern USA, Arizona and New Mexico, Hopi Peoples, ca. 20th century CE. A striking Black Ogre or Nataska (also Nata 'aska) kachina (katsina) doll, hand carved from wood, nicely painted, and embellished with a brown rabbit fur collar. The frightening figure is dressed in a cape and bandolier of white deer hide with shell embellishments, as well as yarn anklets and bracelets, and crowned by a coiffure of animal or human hair and bird plumes. He holds a bow in one hand and a weapon in the other, while his mask features a long snout, bulging eyes, and curved horns. Nataska is one of the family of ogre kachinas who guard Soyok Wuhtl (Ogre Woman) and also see to it that children behave well. Size: 3.8" W x 11.6" H (9.7 cm x 29.5 cm)
