Description:

North Pacific, Hawaii, ca. late 20th to early 21st century CE. Signed "MILO / Christopher Allen". A lovely lathe-turned bowl made from the inherently beautiful Hawaiian hardwood called milo. Sitting upon a flat, circular base, this elegant vessel presents thick walls that rise to a hemispherical body and an annular rim. The smooth surface of the bowl boasts a gorgeous natural woodgrain in swirling hues of honey, butterscotch, and chocolate brown. The base of the fine vessel is signed by the artist Christopher Allen. Such bowls were shaped using stone or coral tools and soaked in seawater to remove the bitter taste from the wood. Interestingly, the milo tree was introduced to Hawaii by the Polynesian people who settled the islands, because they depended on this type of tree for building their canoes! Size: 3.9" in diameter x 1.75" H (9.9 cm x 4.4 cm)
