Description:

Oceania, South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. mid-20th century CE. A lovely bowl carved from finely grained kou wood of natural caramel and citrine hues. The vessel exhibits a round but stable base, a spherical body with a gently tapered shoulder, and an oblong rim surrounding the deep basin. Kou wood has long been coveted by Hawaiian royalty due to its rich color and attractive grain patterns. Bowls like this one were perhaps used for grand ceremonies and feasts held by Hawaiian elites. Size: 5" W x 4.125" H (12.7 cm x 10.5 cm)
