Description:

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. mid 20th century CE. A wonderful calabash wooden bowl with a light honey colored graining. A calabash is a serving bowl named for a gourd shape, but made from natural wood, in this case Norfolk pine. The bowl rests on a flat bottom and impressively thin walls curve in and up to a razor thin lip that leads into the deep interior. Hawaiian royalty often valued specific calabashes - even going so far as to name them after royal individuals - and until the early 19th century they were reserved for elites in society. Norfolk pines are a tree species introduced to the Hawaiian Islands as an ornamental tree. Despite the name, Norfolk pines are not in the pine family, but their wood planks often contain knots much like pine which create nice areas of dark contrast. Size: 9" Diameter x 8" H (22.9 cm x 20.3 cm)
