New World, The Caribbean, Haiti, ca. 20th century CE. A large and lovely textile flag detailed with thousands of individually-applied sequins in a palette of different colors. The central component to this flag is a depiction of the Haitian loa Bossou, a bull-form deity who embodies strength, violence, destruction, and the essence of the wild. Bossou is also known for protecting night-time travelers and aiding in defeating one's enemies. The bull deity is surrounded by a myriad of circles, stars, linear details, and eight-pointed stars, and the entire sequined area is set against a blue fabric backing. Size: 33" W x 30" H (83.8 cm x 76.2 cm).
