Description:

North America, Pacific Northwest, Haida, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A handsome wooden box, with included lid, clad in embossed copper sheets on all sides but the underside. The interior is lined with soft leather. Each copper-clad face has a multitude of Pacific Northwest motifs, with an emphasis on masks. Some of these are high relief, most charmingly the claws of the bear on one side. In traditional Haida society, copper was the ultimate symbol of wealth; when polished, its surface was likened to the sun. Size: 4.3" L x 6.2" W x 3.1" H (10.9 cm x 15.7 cm x 7.9 cm)
