Description:

Central America, Guatemala, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A pair of antique slingshots (ondillas), hand-carved from hard wood. The first slingshot depicts a deceased human with bent legs, arms held against a slightly-bloated abdomen, and a tilted head with a blank expression. The second slingshot takes the form of a stylized skeleton standing atop delineated legs with arms draped to its pelvic bones. Both figures have several prongs projecting from their head or backs. Elaborately carved slingshots are a common theme of Guatemalan folk art from this period. Size of largest (skeleton): 1.375" W x 6.125" H (3.5 cm x 15.6 cm).
