Description:

Central America, Guatemala, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figural "dance" doll with articulated arms. The figure stands on thick legs with his arms riveted via metal wires to swing freely at his sides. Atop his head is an elaborate bird headdress, harkening back to the Maya era. He likely once had a pectoral necklace and cloth skirt as these areas are unpainted while the rest of his skin is blackened with pigments. Size: 5" L x 2.5" W x 12" H (12.7 cm x 6.4 cm x 30.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
