Description:

** A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit The Fowler Museum at UCLA **

Central America, Guatemala, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A well-executed and relatively old Guatemalan mask used for one of the traditional dances of Guatemala, perhaps representing a vaquero, with eye slits just beneath the boldly painted black brows and openwork nostrils for the wearer, finely painted lashes surrounding the eyes once comprised of inlaid glass, but now inlaid with a translucent synthetic material, and a face that has likely been painted several times over the course of many years, now with pink flesh and red lips surrounded by a blue beard, black hair (perforated for attachments), and matching black brows. A lovely early folk art mask from Guatemala.
