Description:

** A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit The Fowler Museum at UCLA **

Latin America, Guatemala, ca. early 20th century CE. This bull means business! An early example of a hand-carved and hand-painted face mask depicting a bull with a fierce countenance. His prominent, separately carved horns, flaring nostrils, determined looking eyes, and lapping tongue make for an intimidating mask most likely used in La Diablada or Danza de lost Diablos (Dance of the Devils) in Guatemala. Animals have traditionally been regarded as sacred in Uru mythology which is a source of symbolism for the Diablada. A fabulous example with eye holes for the wearer to see, painted in a dramatic color scheme of red, black, white, and gold! Nice patina commensurate with age and use! Size: 10" L x 9" W (25.4 cm x 22.9 cm)
