Description:

East Asia, China, ca. mid 20th century CE. A handsome pair of large-scale pendant portraits painted on silk - depicting a male and female sitter - perhaps an emperor and empress or ancestral portraits - with beautiful mandarin orange brocade borders and framed under glass. Both figures face forward and don luxurious winter garments along with elaborate headdresses and ornaments. Note that the male is draped in an animal skin with the fierce visage of the creature peering out from beneath his throne. In the background is a beautiful landscape. The female dons rich red and gold vestments along with a sumptuous beaded headdress. Behind her are instruments for calligraphy, a chrysanthemum, as well as a blossoming branch and incense burner atop scholar stones. Set in matching frames - an attractive pair. Size: 19.5" W x 33" H (49.5 cm x 83.8 cm); 25.25" W x 41" H (64.1 cm x 104.1 cm) framed
