Description:

West Africa, Mali, Djenne peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A large hand-built pottery statue depicting a female figure seated upon folded legs. She wears a simple loincloth around her waist, displays pendulous breasts above a distended abdomen, boasts a wide necklace atop her clavicle, and holds two nude children in her lap. Her stylized head is turned slightly upward and exhibits bulging eyes, a triangular nose, full lips, puffy cheeks, and scarification marks around her temples, all beneath a tightly-woven coiffure which drapes to the nape of her neck. Size: 11.375" L x 5.5" W x 18" H (28.9 cm x 14 cm x 45.7 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces with losses and adhesive residue along break lines. Small abrasions to legs, body, children, and head, with softening to some finer details. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
