Southeast Asia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Ngaju Dayak, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. This is a lovely hand-carved pair of spice bowls that are connected by a short bridge in the center that supports a hand-carved figure. The man from the waist up, rests in a small cavity via a peg, he wears a V-neck long sleeved shirt or jacket, and one hand rests on his head like a salute. His body and head are quite angular and stylized as is characteristic of the Dayak. The exteriors of the bowls are engraved with leafy vines and large blooming flowers. The side of one bowl has a pair of disembodied arms that are shaking or clasping hands. Size: 5.65" L x 2.35" W x 4.75" H (14.4 cm x 6 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000
