Description:

Oceania, Indonesia, Borneo, Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine and intricate ear ornament carved from the casque (or beak) or a hornbill bird, worn by men in sets of two which did not necessarily have to match. The ornament has an ovoid, vermilion-hued body decorated with openwork curvilinear motifs on each side, a cream-hued top which is incredibly smooth to the touch, and a slender suspension hook folded forward over the top of the body. Size: 3.3" L x 1.6" W x 2.5" H (8.4 cm x 4.1 cm x 6.4 cm); 3.4" H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand.
