Description:

West Africa, Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Senufo peoples, early 20th century CE. A fine cast bronze pendant showing a primate in a slightly crouched position on a background of wing-like shape. At the top is a loop of bronze for suspension. In Senufo culture, individuals often seek out the services of a diviner or other kind of shaman figure for medical and spiritual purposes; at the end of a consultation, the diviner will often suggest that they purchase a specific body ornament to be worn for protection. Often these include images of animals who are seen to be go-betweens for humans and the spirit world. Size: 3.75" W x 3.45" H (9.5 cm x 8.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
