Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, First Nations, Coastal Salish / Squamish Nation, ca. second half of the 20th century CE, signed by David Louis (b. 1942). An ornate and striking hand-carved red cedar totem pole with broad attached wings, atop a low base carved from lighter wood. The totem pole features a succession of creatures and masks depicted in the traditional Pacific Northwest style, including the majestic thunderbird at the top and the orca whose broad tail is visible as a "U" just above the base. Size: 11.6" W x 13" H (29.5 cm x 33 cm)

David Louis is a member of the Musqueam band of the Coastal Salish, who are the ethnic and linguistic group that contains the Squamish Nation. Louis is a self taught artist who lives on the Capilano Reservation in Vancouver. He carves mainly totem poles and wood plaques.
