East Asia, China, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful figural sculpture depicting a majestic woman seated upon the back of a horse, all hand-carved from jadeite of mottled white, green, and orange hues. The sublime presentation features the woman holding a volute-topped object, perhaps a vegetable, while facing off the righthand side of her trusty steed. The horse stands atop its hind legs while lowering its body down via its bent forelegs, and the animal turns its gaze towards the woman. The sculpture rests atop a hand-carved, openwork wooden base bearing lustrous red and brown hues. Size: 3.125" W x 3.8" H (7.9 cm x 9.7 cm); 4.875" H (12.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000
