Description:

East Asia, China, ca. early 20th century CE. An elaborately carved bamboo vessel of the type traditionally used by scribes for holding calligraphy brushes. The extensive carved imagery includes flowering foliage/trees, oversized perched birds, miniature human figures, quaint thatch roofed edifices, waves and/or clouds, hills and mountainsides, and a running fence - as well as a possible makers mark comprised of intersecting elipses to the left and below one of the perched birds. The cylindrical brush pot was made from a generous piece of bamboo that was deeply and finely carved. Quite smooth to the touch, the bamboo/wood has developed a marvelous age patina. A lovely example! Size: 4.25" in diameter x 12.25" H (10.8 cm x 31.1 cm); walls are .5" thick (1.3 cm)
