Description:

South America, Chile, ca. 20th century CE. A lovely cast silver mate drinking implement, including a bombilla straw and a cup of a spherical form. The cup is repousse decorated with flower motifs and a pair of birds rest on each side of the rim like handles. The cup sits on an elegancies baluster neck attached to a saucer base that rests on 3 clawed feet. Four wires with birds and baroque scrolling vines accent the side, slightly quivering with the slightest movement of the cup. The underside of the saucer rim contains "handmade" "sterling silver" and purity marks. The bombilla straw is 68% silver and has strainer built into the tip to filter out the mate tea particles, which is stamped "800." This ornate tiered cup resembles incense burners that were popular in Peru and Northern Chile. Size: 5" Diameter x 7" H (12.7 cm x 17.8 cm); quality of silver: mate is 92.5% and bombilla is 68%
