Description:

Africa, Cameroon Grasslands, ca. early 20th century CE. A nude standing terracotta female figure of an expressive form with two pairs of voluptuous breasts, the larger pair with scarification marks, incised lower genitalia, and generally rounded features suggestive of her use as a fertility figure. She stands in a rather dynamic position with her torso slightly rotated, her right hand placed upon her head, her left upon her thigh. Her arms and legs are rather long relative to the rest of her body, with large hands and feet with nicely delineated digits. Incised scarification marks also adorn her right thigh. She is also decorated with incised bracelets and a bead and cowrie shell necklace. Her visage is perhaps most interesting with wonderfully modeled coffee bean shaped eyes, full cheeks, a rounded chin, an impressed dotted coiffure, two larger pierced circular motifs at the ear area indicating ornaments, and a pleasant smile. An intriguing work with a dynamic pose which is uncharacteristic for African art. Size: 3.75" W x 6" H (9.5 cm x 15.2 cm)
