Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. early 20th century CE. A large and striking Burmese wood sculpture of a dancing Nat figure, a nature spirit, dressed in traditional attire, and adorned with layers of red lacquer and then gold gilt. As the figure aged, some of the gilt has worn away revealing the lacquer beneath. Before the advent of Buddhism, the Burmese worshipped a group of nature spirits known as Nats. Over time, these spirits were incorporated into Burmese Buddhism, and Nat statues are often found within Buddhist temples and shrines.
