Description:

West Africa, Burkina Faso or Mali, Gurunsi or Bwa peoples, ca. 20th century CE. A dramatic, colorful wooden mask featuring a long-snouted animal with bulging eyes and pointed ears or short horns. The creature has an articulated jaw. Above its head is a massive, geometrically-shaped headdress, its surface incised and painted with bright red, white, and black pigment. Masks like this one represent animal spirits who manifest themselves in ceremonies and dances when the masks appear. Size: 9.25" W x 32.25" H (23.5 cm x 81.9 cm); 40.25" H (102.2 cm) on included custom stand.
