Description:

Western Africa, Ivory Coast, Baule (Baoule) people, ca. mid 20th century CE. An ingenious hardwood carved vessel with a skirted base encircled by a relief band of rectangular motifs, each separated by high-relief animal horns. An iron disc covers the hollow base of the vessel. On its interior, roughly halfway into its length, is a platform with a single small hole in it - this is designed to capture vermin, with a tasty lure having been placed into the vessel via removing the metal disc on its base. A loop for suspension is on one side. Size: 6.75" W x 6.55" H (17.1 cm x 16.6 cm)

Provenance: private Pearson collection, Denver, Colorado, USA; ex-Marshall Mount collection, passed as a gift to Christopher Mount
