Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. mid 20th century CE. A dramatic wooden temple sculpture in the form of a fantastical creature with bulging eyes, massive teeth, and a lion-like body. Flame-like wings rise from the back of the figure, who also wears a crown of flames. The figure is painted with deep red pigment with added golden pigment touches and some black to highlight the hair. It stands on an integrally carved base with an intricate, swirling motif. Balinese architecture - from temples to family homes - is famous for its array of carved wooden flourishes and figures, with guardian figures like this one known as "bedigol". You can easily picture this one perched on the side of a temple in the lush Balinese landscape. Size: 9.75" L x 11.75" W x 24.5" H (24.8 cm x 29.8 cm x 62.2 cm)
