Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A delightful wood mask in the form of a tiger with sharp fangs and an extended tongue. Used during the traditional topeng dance of Bali, the evocative vizard is hand-painted with stripes and polka-dots in hues of green, red, black, and white. The fun feline features bulging, round eyes beneath arched brows, an anthropomorphic nose, and full, parted lips exposing jagged teeth and a floppy, separately-sculpted tongue, all crowned by a pair of perky ears. Size: 8.1" W x 11" H (20.6 cm x 27.9 cm)

Provenance: private Constance McCormick Fearing estate, Montecito, California, USA, acquired before 2004
